A starter guide to Phantom Blade Zero — what kind of game it is, who makes it, where the story begins, and what to play first.

Phantom Blade Zero is a dark wuxia action role-playing game developed and published by S-GAME, the Beijing studio behind the classic Rainblood (Xueyu) series. It was first revealed with a gameplay trailer during a PlayStation Showcase on May 25, 2023, and after years of anticipation it now has a firm launch date: October 29, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and PC.
What kind of game is it?
The game blends exploration-driven ARPG structure with the precision of traditional character action games. Combat is built around the Sha-Chi system, which rewards alternating between aggressive offense and perfectly timed defensive reads. Director Soulframe Liang describes the fantasy as a "kungfupunk" world — Chinese martial arts culture fused with steampunk machinery and a shadowy jianghu underworld.
Story in one paragraph
You play as Soul, an elite assassin of The Order who is framed for the murder of the organization's patriarch. Mortally wounded, Soul is saved by a mysterious healer but told he has only 66 days to live. That deadline drives the entire campaign: a revenge-fueled race through the Phantom World to uncover the conspiracy behind the betrayal before time runs out.
Where does it sit in the series?
Phantom Blade Zero is a spiritual rebirth of Rainblood: Town of Death, the indie cult classic that put S-GAME on the map. The new game expands that story's scope many times over while keeping its bleak, ink-washed tone. You do not need to play any earlier entry — the story stands completely on its own.
