Phantom Blade Zero is developed and self-published by S-GAME (Beijing Lingyoufang Software), an independent Chinese studio founded by director Soulframe Liang. The studio's story explains a lot about the game's tone: this is a team returning to the genre that made its name.

From indie cult classic to mobile success

S-GAME began as a tiny indie operation whose Rainblood series — ink-dark wuxia RPGs starting with Rainblood: Town of Death — became a cult hit and put the studio on China's game-industry map. The team then moved into mobile with the Phantom Blade line, which succeeded commercially but pulled the studio away from the premium single-player games it was founded to make.

The return

Phantom Blade Zero is openly framed as a return to first principles: a dark, story-driven, single-player wuxia action RPG built on Unreal Engine 5, with no gacha and no service-game hooks. Liang has described the project as reclaiming the studio's original dream at several times the scale of the original Rainblood.

Backed for the long haul

The project drew outside investment as it grew — see our investors and backers overview — and platform support followed: Sony put the reveal on a PlayStation Showcase stage and later gave the game its own State of Play presentation.
